Paul Kozal and William Scott at Viewpoint in November/December From November 11 to December 17, Viewpoint will feature the work of two photographers from the northern California coast, William Scott and Paul Kozal. Paul Kozal’s work often deals with the western landscape but hearkens back to Pictorialist aesthetics rather than “West Coast photography”. He typically photographs in fog or soft light, and his small black-and-white prints employ toners, diffusion, screens, handcoloring, and other techniques to amplify mood and emphasize artistic interpretation over documentation. Paul and his wife Carol own and operate Studio 391, a photography gallery in Gualala, and live at Sea Ranch. Paul is represented by several galleries across the U.S., and he has self-published two book-and-print combinations available only through Studio 391 (www.studio391.net). His work can be viewed online at www.paulkozal.com. William Scott has photographed extensively in California, Mexico, and Ireland (where his parents were born), and all three bodies of work are represented in his Viewpoint exhibit. Less Pictorialist in style than Kozal’s work, Scott’s split-toned black-and-white images feature dramatic lighting, deep shadows, and forceful compositions to reveal, as he says, “fragments which when combined leave only hints, impressions, and more questions.” William Scott lives in Fort Bragg with his wife, Anne Harvey, and their daughter. His work is available through Studio 391, Susan Spiritus Gallery, and Oswald Gallery, and can be explored online at www.williamscottart.com. |
