The Viewpoint Gallery presents an exhibition of photographs by SVPAC members Donna Fay Allen, Lori Emmington, Susan L-Nikel, and Dianne Poinski. The four photographers address the theme of the exhibition with a variety of techniques, which often include manipulations or drawing and painting on the images.

Donna Fay Allen is the immediate past president of SVPAC. Her work in this show consists of images from the Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco . Beginning with Polaroid SX-70 prints, she manipulates the images with a stylus to soften and push the images. The pictures are then scanned and printed as digital enlargements, which are enhanced with oil-based pastels.

Lori Emmington’s images in the exhibition also begin as manipulated Polaroid prints, enlarged as inkjet prints on watercolor paper, and then enhanced with artist’s pastels and colored pencils. Before working with the SX-70 manipulations, Emmington experimented with image transfers and emulsion transfers.

Susan L-Nikel has used photography for the past seven years to capture and convey the places she visits on her travels. She strives to blend a bit of the past with the present, with a favorite theme of architecture and its character. Nikel says about her subjects, “places that humans have created with their hands carry their spirits.” The photographs in this exhibition represent a new step for Nikel into digital photography.

After working almost exclusively with black-and-white images for several years, Dianne Poinski has found a whole new realm of possibilities by hand-tinting her monochrome images with photo oil paints and colored art pencils. Her images are each previsualized as a hand-tinted print, seeing softness in color and form that may not be present in the actual scene.
