Gordon Hutchings
"Seeing in Silver"
March 2 thru April 13, 2001
Reception: Saturday, March 10, 2001, 5:30 8:30 PM
Technical Discussion: March 10, 2001, 3:30 PM
Currently in our Gallery we feature the work of Gordon Hutchings. He is a
recognized authority in the field of pyro printing and the author of the
definitive “Book of Pyro”, now in its third printing and well known all over
the world.
"Mono Lake"
Hutchings is 60 years old and has been photographing since he was 8 years old. He got his start with a plastic camera purchased with cereal boxtops and 50 cents. In high school, he was given a 5x7 folding Graflex and began taking black and white photographs. To save money on film, he cut 5x7 pieces from 5 inch surplus aero film. He has done black and white view camera work for over 40 years. The work in the exhibit will cover the last 25 years of his work, shifting from a broad view to a more personal view with recent work.

"Coastal Lagoon 1985"
Hutchings has taught many workshops, including some with Morely Baer, Steve Simmons and Ralph Talbert. He has had both individual and group shows and is represented in permanent collections in museums and media centers. His photographs have been published throughout North America and Europe.

"Grazalema Spain 1989"
There will be a reception on Second Saturday, March 10, from 5:30 to 8:30
PM. Prior to the reception at 3:30 PM, there will be a Technical
Discussion regarding the technical aspects of preparing the prints in the
exhibit, including a discussion of the use of pyro.
Gordon has generously offered to give all of the proceeds from the sales
of the prints on display to the Gallery.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT
It gives me great pleasure to offer this show for the benefit of the
Viewpoint Gallery. Years ago during one of my early shows, Mr. Mead Kibby
made a generous purchase and donated those prints to the Crocker Art
Museum. This singular act of generosity helped instill in me a dedication
to my art, undiminished to this day. It is my hope that in a small way this how
returns a favor.
Each of us experiences the world in a unique way. I really doubt that even in
six billion people there are two people that see in exactly the same way.
I simply photograph what engages my sense of aesthetics and mystery.
Although a fairly rigorous technique is used, I like to stay as open to
experience as possible, and simply follow the light and my instincts. I hope you
like the photographs.
