Artist's Statement

Peg Keranen
My photographic work is eclectic, ranging from nature to cityscapes, from nudes to still
lifes. Intrigued by unique, abstract, surrealistic, and contrasting elements in the landscape, I work
mainly with ''found" images, looking for what is meaningful to me at that moment under the
existing physical conditions.

"Spraying Lips"
One of my objectives in photography is to aid myself and others in seeing what is around us, in
order to expand our visions to perceive shapes, color, and textures and to evoke a range of
emotions by the subject matter, the mystery, or the beauty of the image. My interests in both the
natural and urban environments were deepened by my previous careers in urban planning and
biology. My photographs are influenced by my travels and my study of visual and other art forms.

My serious involvement in photography began with formal training in the early 1980*s at San
Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California. This training has been supplemented by numerous
workshops and study and, most importantly, extensive observation and work in the field and
darkroom. I use both small and medium format cameras and produce llfochrome (Cibachrome)
color prints, which I mat using archival materials.

Most of the images in this exhibit come from my ongoing series: abstractions in color and form,
windows and reflections, portrayals of the female, and whimsy.
Henry Paine
Artist's Statement

Henry
Paine
Stockton photographer Henry Paine has devoted years of his life to mastering the
vision and techniques of black and white photography. His work shows the nuances of light,
shape, texture and form through pictorial design. He does not seek out foreign and exotic
subject matter; his eye finds the subjects that are all around us, drawn from our local and
regional geography.

"Agave Victoriae Reginae"
His earliest interest in photograph occurred after attending a workshop and seeing the work
of Ansel Adams. Inspired by the infinite tonalities and luminosity of Adams' photographs,
Paine taught himself the Zone System technique that was first developed by Adams.

The Zone System, as Ansel Adams conceived it, is the path from the photographer's
previsualization to the final print. It is a philosophy of technique and approach, an attitude
where the values of fine art and photographic science support the photographer's conscious
perception of the world in front of the camera. Henry Paine has ably demonstrated his
mastery of this philosophy.

Paine works with both 5" x 7" and 2 1/4" x 3 1/4" view cameras and a small selection of
lenses. He uses commonly available films which he develops in a formula commonly
referred to as Pyro. This formula has become legendary among generations of photographers for its abilities to render the subtleties of light and shadow.
Henry Paine can be reached at his own gallery and camera repair shop, (209) 942-2821, 147
E. Alpine Ave. Stockton, CA 95204. His e-mail address is hpaine@inreach.com.
