A call for entries was sent out on the internet, and through Sacramento Valley schools and photography supply and service business. The result was 168 entries from our own backyard and from as far away as New Zealand.  Thirty-eight entrants had their work selected for exhibit by Juror Walter C. Kennedy, photographer and sculptor.

This is an exhibit showcasing photography as a true area of the arts. These are images that cannot be made by anyone who has a camera and a roll of black and white or color film. They show the diversity of photographic processes where photography is more about light and art than it is about cameras.

The exhibit runs from January 12 through February 23, 2001. There is an Artists’ reception on Second Saturday, January 13, from 5:30 to 8:30 PM.

Following are some images taken from the Artists' Reception on Jan. 13.

JUROR'S STATEMENT - Walter C. Kennedy

It was a privilege and a challenge to judge this show. With 168 entries, it quickly became obvious that  many excellent pieces would have to be left out simply because of space limitations.

I would certainly like to offer thanks and encouragement to anyone whose work did not make it into the show; there is no doubt that many different exhibits could have been mounted by choosing different but equally impressive pieces.

It was very exciting to see such a wonderful range of techniques and feeling in this work.

Sincerely,
Walter Kennedy

Photographer and sculptor, Walter Kennedy received his B.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute, and has a M.A. from California State University at Sacramento.  He teaches photography at both American River College and Sierra College.  His work is included in many private and corporate collections, and has been exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Crocker Museum in Sacramento.

WORKSHOP

In conjunction with this exhibit, the Viewpoint Gallery is presenting a workshop on getting started in digital imaging called "Diving Into Digital" and will be presented on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001 at 3:30 PM (just before the Artists' Reception).
