Artist’s Statement I have always had cameras of some sort throughout my life, but it wasn’t until the early 90’s that I developed a taste for the fine art and joy that photography can bring. This led to a procession of night classes in photography at Napa Valley College, where I lived at the time (Napa, CA), and a joining of the local photographic community there. The first time I watched a print develop in the darkroom was a memorable and magical moment, and from that point on, the art of crafting images, with complete creative control from start to finish, dominated my free time. My move to Sacramento in 1998, led to a discovery of areas just a few hours drive away in eastern California, on the other side of the Sierras, some of the most scenic lands on Earth, in my opinion. This is an area I have visited on numerous occasions. I am always on the lookout for patterns and shapes, and colors in nature. And above all, the continuing transformation of light and atmospheric conditions. A close understanding of the character of light is essential for me in formulating scenes, and times to photograph, and times not to. After all, photography is literally sketching with light. Capturing a moment in time, with light as the paintbrush, is the essence of photography. I am also on the lookout for human interfacing with nature. Old rusting cars, structures, and equipment melting into nature in a rural setting I have found was best documented by Kodak High Speed B&W Infrared film, which unlocked a different and exciting way of looking at the world in front of me. |
