The framing workshop was great. The workshop was given by Beth Downs, CPF, and Ron Downs, CPF, at their store, Frames West in Orangevale. Beth started the session with a presentation on mat and frames selection. There was a discussion on the proper location of the mat window, sizing the mat to the art piece, and the use of non-white mat colors and different mat textures to enhance the presentation of the art. She showed a variety of frame types and presented ideas on selecting the proper one. There was an extremely informative discussion by Beth and Ron on various methods to archivally mount and protect photographs within the mat and frame. They then concluded the first part of the workshop with a description on correct wall hanging techniques.
For the second part of the workshop, we went into the Frames West working
area where Ron gave demonstrations on how to cut window mats, how to cut
v-groove mats, glass selection and cutting, and the use of various tools and
techniques to complete the framing of the art piece. At the end, everyone
came away with new ideas and a better appreciation on the importance of proper matting and framing in the preservation and presentation of your art
work. Thanks so much to Beth and Ron for graciously inviting us into their
space and providing such an informative workshop.
Ron and Beth were both trained at the
R&D Framing School in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Both have passed the
difficult examination by the Professional Framers Association (PPFA).
They are also active in the local chapter of PPFA.
