WORKSHOPS
Hand Tinting Photographs
  Date: September 8, 15, & 22, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Instructor: Judith Monroe
Where: Viewpoint
Fee: $100 members, $150 non-members; plus materials cost
Sign-up or information: Gene Kennedy, , 916.645.0781
A recent Viewpoint exhibitor, Judith Monroe is a photographic artist working with alternative processes to create one of-a-kind handcolored works. Whether starting with traditional black-and-white photographs or color Polaroid transfers, Judith focuses on revealing her memories of the emotional and spiritual pull of the landscapes she has found, evoking a personal response in viewers.
This workshop explores traditional and contemporary approaches to handcoloring photographs. Participants will get hands-on experience applying various media onto photographs, including colored pencils, oils, watercolors, and more.

  • Session 1: Learn a little handcoloring history; get an overview of papers and printing, materials, and layering colors; begin handcoloring.
  • Session 2: Learn about and experiment with more media, including watercolors made just for photos, even RC prints! You also get to play with oils, pencils, and pastels and discover how they all work together.
  • Session 3: Put a final layer of color on any unfinished pieces, work with all of the above media, and try more experimentation. Bring all your finished pieces to share.
Participants can bring their own photos to handcolor—for the first session, they should be matte-finish silver gelatin or ink jet prints—or use Judith’s work prints.

Preston Castle, Ione
  Date:Saturday, August 18th @ 7 a.m.
Field Trip Leader: Ric Hornor

www.prestoncastle.com
Built to accommodate the Preston School of Industry in 1894, this building is the most significant example of Romanesque Revival architecture in the gold country. The School of Industry was an attempt to rehabilitate juvenile offenders. It closed in 1960 when the school built a new building.
When arriving at Preston Castle, the gate will be open (I think it's chain linked.) Drive through and you should see a green/silver Lexus SUV. Park the same way it is so the castle can be photographed without cars in the shot.
Public tours start at 10 a.m., plan to finish shooting by then.
Entry cost is $10 to Preston Castle Foundation. (Viewpoint does not charge for Field Trips)
